I have not posted in days because frankly speaking that rape gist that broke all over Twitter on Saturday night/Sunday morning really bummed me out. (I have been looking for how best to say something on it here and would not post anything else till I talked bout it.)
It got worse after I saw the video. My friend who showed it to me regretted doing so after seeing how badly I reacted to it. The first question that came to my mind was: Is it so hard to find someone willing enough to sleep with you?
Why did they have to put the poor girl through so much hell just for sex? And to all those that were saying that the girl asked for it: No one ever asks to be made a victim!
And to those who asked why did she go there anyway? Well, most crimes of passion (or whatever you want to call it) are often perpetrated by someone who the victim trusts. Does it mean we should stop trusting people? Nope, just be extra careful with those you trust.
I can’t even write a good post on this shit but I love how dailytimesng is handling it and following it up- that’s journalism! I liked especially Chxta’s article especially where he says:
Let Chxta make one thing clear here. Chxta has sisters; and were it Chxta’s sister that was at the receiving end of this kind of behaviour from some idiot, Chxta would make sure he (they) get beaten to death if that is the last thing that Chxta does.
Please read the articles for the full gist (if you do not already know about the case) and be enraged to action if it is just teaching your kids- not just your daughters- more about the ways of the world. The best protection you can bestow to your child against things like this is educating them about it.
No, don’t just “reject it” or God-forbid-it. Let your baby know that evil exists in this world and teach them how to avoid being victims.
Kudos to Linda Ikeji for stirring up a storm. With the way the government is dragging their feet on it, I hope something tangible comes out of all this. Something that would bring peace to the girl and other rape victims in the long run.
