How to cope with losing your job

I was out of a job for about two weeks last month (lucky me, I hear you say). It was one of the crazier periods in my life (trust me! there has been a lot of crazy so far.)

Boot! And you are out!

So, based on my experience, here are five tips on how to cope when you suddenly lose your job. By the way, I did not cope well at all, so you can learn from my experience on how to do things better.

1. Don’t panic!

Of course, I panicked. I have never really been out of a job and just couldn’t bear the thought of months without steady pay. Jobs are hard to come by and I know people who have been unemployed for years. Oh God, what if that is me, I kept thinking. The problem with panic is that it stops you from thinking straight. Unless you have no talent, educational qualifications, work experience, friends and family or faith, losing your job is not the end of the world.

2. Be positive!

See this as an opportunity to do those things you have been putting off because of work. I always wanted to take courses in event management but because I spent the two weeks wallowing in self-pity, I never got to do that. I also did not brush up on my French, visit my sister in Enugu… or work on this blog. I know a guy who lost his job during the recession in the UK; he used that “break” to travel the world.

3. Try not to remain idle.

The fact that you may not have regular job does not mean you have to stop working. Find things to keep you busy; better for you if they are things that would put money in your pocket. Do not spend your time watching movies or surfing the internet aimlessly. Whatever you do, make sure it is something that adds value to you. Learn a trade, a language, study something! Start your own business!

4. Do not be ashamed to ask for help.

Tell your friends and family that you are unemployed- not so that they can pity you but that they might help you with new prospects. You do not know where help might come from so do not be discouraged when some may not be so kind or forthcoming with their response. Remember, be positive!

5. Have faith.

My personal mantra is “something always comes up” because I have learnt something always does for those who believe. During my days of employment I kept watching “Company Men”. It’s a movie about how three men coped with losing their jobs during the recession. Of course, not all of them survived. Anyway from the movie I drew this other mantra which gave me courage towards the end of those two weeks. Here it is: I will win! Why? Because I have faith, courage and enthusiasm.

May you never lose your source of income!

UN commends Nigeria on response to UN HQ bomb blast

Read article here.

Were you expecting me to say more? Ol boy, I no fit shout jo. Politricks!

PS: I was gonna title this post UN Secretary  General commends Nigeria on UN bomb blast – How about that?!

On the ABSU rape

I have not posted in days because frankly speaking that rape gist that broke all over Twitter on Saturday night/Sunday morning really bummed me out. (I have been looking for how best to say something on it here and would  not post anything else till I talked bout it.)

It got worse after I saw the video. My friend who showed it to me regretted doing so after seeing how badly I reacted to it. The first question that came to my mind was: Is it so hard to find someone willing enough to sleep with you?

Why did they have to put the poor girl through so much hell just for sex? And to all those that were saying that the girl asked for it: No one ever asks to be made a victim!

And to those who asked why did she go there anyway? Well, most crimes of passion (or whatever you want to call it) are often perpetrated by someone who the victim trusts. Does it mean we should stop trusting people?  Nope, just be extra careful with those you trust.

I can’t even write a good post on this shit but I love how dailytimesng is handling it and following it up- that’s journalism! I liked especially Chxta’s article especially where he says:

Let Chxta make one thing clear here. Chxta has sisters; and were it Chxta’s sister that was at the receiving end of this kind of behaviour from some idiot, Chxta would make sure he (they) get beaten to death if that is the last thing that Chxta does.

Please read the articles for the full gist (if you do not already know about the case) and be enraged to action if it is just teaching your kids- not just your daughters- more about the ways of the world. The best protection you can bestow to your child against things like this is educating them about it.

No, don’t just “reject it” or God-forbid-it. Let your baby know that evil exists in this world and teach them how to avoid being victims.

Kudos to Linda Ikeji for stirring up a storm. With the way the government is dragging their feet on it, I hope something tangible comes out of all this. Something that would bring peace to the girl and other rape victims in the long run.

Kelis is called “probably a disgusting Nigerian”

Kelis

She is even telling her fans "waka"!

A “red-faced” white man calls her “Kunta Kinte” and “probably a disgusting Nigerian”, she calls her kid “midget”.

When will we all stop with the name-calling?

Read Kelis twitter rant about her racist experience in a UK airport.

Read Guardian UK’s take on it.

After reading both, all I am thinking is “She calls her kid “midget”?!!”

Lord help the young boy’s psyche for when he grows up. And if he doesn’t grow tall enough, he shoud blame his mom. Her term of “endearment” proclaimed his future.

WATCH: The Winklevoss twins (keep) dissing Mark Zuckerberg

Really, these guys need to get a life.

Move on and invent something else! Don’t tell me “Facebook” or whatever you named your original idea was the best one you ever had.

WATCH: Lagos from a car

I love this video so much that is why I am sharing it with y’all. It was made by Derek Griesbach, a trainer at the just concluded Del York/New York Film Academy.

`

I love it because without being about that, it actually shows the highest contact most Europeans and Americans who come to Lagos make with the city. And just by viewing Lagos from a car, some assume automatically that they know everything they need to know about Lagos and even Nigeria.

They then go back to their countries, bragging about how they had just visited “one of the most dangerous cities in the world”  and survived. They don’t stop there but based on their limited car knowledge, they make broad assertions about how Lagos is like this and how the people are like that. And this is not only true for one time visitors but even for so-called expatriates who have lived here for years!

Truth be told, there are actually some who get frustrated with the car. They either long to step out and mingle or do do. These ones are the few who actually experience the city. But like I said, they are few.

The guy who made this video is one of these few. He actually loves Lagos. And after staying just one month in the state, he wants to come back and stay for a longer period *shock*

Security service locates Boko Haram bomb factory

They even have a factory!

I hope this image is accurate. The media these days tend to pick images "close" to the story rather than the real thing

This government of Goodluck Jonathan… *taking a deep breath* Nope, I refuse to rant.

We need security more than anything in Nigeria (yes, including constant electricity). don’t you think so?

How do you like your Jesus?

White with blue eyes? Brown with brown eyes? Black with kinky hair? Or a tatooe biker-type Jesus?

This is not really Jesus, you know?

Almost since Christianity decided that they would depict their Lord in pictures, there has been controversy of what he should really look like. Seems like the Lord’s looks changes depending on who is believing in him. Or the times.

There are some who feel there should be a more modern (updated) version of Christ. Obviously, still with the blue eyes but brawny to differentiate him from the growing effeminate male culture.

The point is no matter how you like Jesus, robed with long hair or clean-shaven and tatooed, it is not what he looks liek that matters but how you see him in your fellow man.

Simple.

The wife-battering high commissioner has been recalled

He does look like a boxer.

But if I know Nigeria politics, would soon reinvent himself as a Senator or one person’s special assisstant or the other.

Thanks to the fight by Kenya women rights group some measure justice has been done but of course no further action would be taken now. After all, it is a domestic issue…

Sigh.

Bread to become expensive/scare commodity

In the last month there has been reported increase in the price of bread in at least three states. In Bauchi, this led to a protest. Yet some people think this is a joke or something they should not concern themselves with.

Should I remind you that bread is a staple in Nigeria just like rice, beans and garri.

So many people have bread for breakfast, even lunch and dinner so for some ajebota on Twitter to ask “Is this news?” it shows a great and pitiable disconnect.

This is similar to asking if the increae in price of kerosine is news. People are more concerned with fuel and gas than kerosine which is the poor man’s staple.

And things keep getting worse…
