In 2008, the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launched the UNiTE to End Violence against Women campaign to help “raise public awareness and increase political will and resources for preventing and ending all forms of violence against women and girls in all parts of the world.”
On the website are six ways men and boys can help end violence against women:
Educate yourself about the causes and consequences of violence against women and girls.
Listen to girls and women you know to learn from them and their experiences.
Challenge sexist language and jokes that degrade women and girls.
Learn to recognize and oppose violence and harassment of women and girls in your school, community and family.
Examine how your own attitudes and behavior might contribute to the problem.
Support, financially or otherwise, organizations that work to provide women and girls with alternatives to violence and discontinue support to those institutions that promote violence.
UNiTE is also holding a competition that urges men and boys to design T-shirts that speaks on this issue. Below is one designed by a Nigerian.
I love this video so much that is why I am sharing it with y’all. It was made by Derek Griesbach, a trainer at the just concluded Del York/New York Film Academy.
`
I love it because without being about that, it actually shows the highest contact most Europeans and Americans who come to Lagos make with the city. And just by viewing Lagos from a car, some assume automatically that they know everything they need to know about Lagos and even Nigeria.
They then go back to their countries, bragging about how they had just visited “one of the most dangerous cities in the world” and survived. They don’t stop there but based on their limited car knowledge, they make broad assertions about how Lagos is like this and how the people are like that. And this is not only true for one time visitors but even for so-called expatriates who have lived here for years!
Truth be told, there are actually some who get frustrated with the car. They either long to step out and mingle or do do. These ones are the few who actually experience the city. But like I said, they are few.
The guy who made this video is one of these few. He actually loves Lagos. And after staying just one month in the state, he wants to come back and stay for a longer period *shock*
I have been following this competition from the beginning including spending two whole days trying to watch as much of the videos that I could. Don’t try that shit! It’s a fruitless, un-entertaining and eventually disappointing endeavour.
After sometime, all the videos are the same with people “borrowing” ideas from previous videos. Not to talk of dance steps.
Ok, Top 5!
No.1: THE ALHAJIS
No. 2: THIS CHICK THAT FELL FLAT ON HER ASS
No. 3: OK, I LOVE “MY BACKYARD CREW” BUT SINCE THEIR VIDEO WAS DIRECTED BY A PROFESSIONAL, I DON’T THINK THEY SHOULD WIN.
No. 4: THIS DUDE THAT STARTED TEH DANCING WITH DICK CRAZE! LOVE HIS ENERGY, HATE THE BOUNCING DICK!
N0. 5: … sorry, no numberr five. I just love the four.
Obviously, I am feminist… that is, going by my choices.
Okay, you got me! I can’t take my eyes off Don Jazzy’s butt. Some girls would kill to have at least that kind of ass! Also, the dude can actually dance.
Okay, this a body most women only dream to have at that age.
And no it is not magic or genes. It takes hardwork and sacrifice like every other thing worth having. Lots of exercise and dieting and sometimes even plastic surgery.
So the moral of the story is:
If you do not have a “banging” body like Halle Berry at 45, appreciate the still banging (because it belongs to you exclusively) one you have. and be happy! After all said and done, a beautiful personality/SPIRIT is far better than a beautiful body.
It must be really unfortunate being a celebrity kid. All those cameras in your face even before you turn five. But like they say, it is better to be born doing it than being thrown. (more…)
